The wave arrives either way. The only question is whether your child is swimming.
Not some people. Everyone. Every graduate, every applicant, every colleague, in every industry your child might one day walk into.
Which means having it will separate nobody. It will be like having email — assumed, unremarkable, and no advantage whatsoever.
Every generation has had a dividing line at work. Literacy. Numeracy. Computers. This generation’s line is direction — and it is being drawn right now, while they’re still at school.

It’s worth being clear-eyed about this, because it’s the whole argument for everything else on this page.
Recall. Research. Drafting. Writing the code. Producing the thing once someone has decided what the thing should be. It already does all of this, and it will only get better at it.
Knowing what’s worth making. Judging whether what came back is any good. Holding a vision for months. Going through the wall instead of stopping at it. Getting it finished.
That right-hand column is the entire future of human work. And every single thing in it is something a real build demands, week after week, from a young person who is trying to finish one.
Every generation had one technology that divided those who used it from those who didn’t.
No young person ever became creative by sitting through a lesson on creativity. Nobody learns persistence from a worksheet, and nobody learns judgement from being told the answer.
They develop the only way anyone ever has — by spending months designing, building, failing, fixing and finishing something real.
And they don’t arrive one at a time. A real build demands them all at once, in synergy — you can’t plan without thinking, or finish without persisting, or improve without listening. That isn’t a curriculum. That’s how capability is actually built.
Imagining things that don’t exist yet — and turning imagination into something workable.
Thinking before building. The habit that separates good work from wasted work.
Breaking hard problems into steps, and finding a way through when there isn’t an obvious one.
Directing it, questioning it, building on what it gives you — the defining skill of their generation.
Saying exactly what you mean. Explaining an idea so someone else can act on it.
Making things other people enjoy using — simplicity, clarity, care.
Asking better questions, and knowing which answers are worth trusting.
First versions are never the best. Improvement as a reflex rather than a chore.
Carrying a long project from idea to finished — planning, organising, delivering.
Meeting a wall and going through it. Again. And again.
Showing your work and standing behind it.
Not the kind you’re told. The kind you earn by finishing.
Not one of those is a thing a machine will take. Not one of them is a schoolroom subject. And it is very close to word-for-word the list an employer gives when you ask what they can’t find.
Ask anyone who hires. They’ll tell you qualifications are easy to come by — what they can’t find is someone who takes an idea and carries it, thinking, through obstacles, to a finished thing.
Your child would spend months doing exactly that. Before they leave school.

Underneath the screens and the sketches, one thing is being worked on every single week: the spirit that says “I’ll make that” — and then goes and does it.
The websites, the apps, the games — they’re the clay. They matter enormously, and they are not the point. In a world where anything can be produced on request, the scarce thing is no longer skill. It’s the person who decides something should exist, and won’t let go until it does.
Advantage compounds. So does waiting.
Careers, businesses, homes, futures. And the method — the only method there has ever been for making anything real — never changes:
See it when nobody else can. Think it through properly. Plan it. Start. Hit the wall. Go through the wall. Keep going long after it stopped being exciting. Finish.
That’s how a website gets built at thirteen, and it’s how a life gets built at thirty. We use projects because they’re the safest place in the world to learn it — the stakes are small and the lesson is permanent.
Parents spend years asking their children, “what do you want to be when you grow up?”
Because job titles change. Technologies change. Whole industries disappear inside a decade. But people who know how to build always find their place in whatever comes next.
That’s the thing you can’t buy them, can’t teach them in an evening, and can’t hand over in a lesson. It has to be built, in them, over months, by doing hard things and finishing them.
The project, the portfolio, the pride — all of that is simply what happens when you give a child the keys.
